Saturday morning 12th of may, I woke up and like everyday I left for office on my bike.. After I got to office I was sitting on my chair I felt a discomfort in my lower abdomen, and in matter of few seconds it went terrible wrong and unbearable. I closed my office near 10:30AM and drove back to home somehow bearing the pain. Please leave you comments or suggestion below be sure to read full story. |
After an hour I felt the pain is gone, then I made call to my Dad, and I though of going home and get some ultra sound done of my lower abdomen. So we left for home . I wanted to avoid a bumpy ride from Ludhiana Samrala Chownk to to Phillaur, So I told my dad to pick me from Samrala chownk. He was there by the time we reached. I told my Dad to get scan done maybe stones have moved from its place that might have caused pain, so instead of going home we went to Arora Neuro center in Ludhiana and there I got Ultrasound done of KUB(Lower Abdomen). The report reveled that one of stone which is 11.5 mm is stuck near ureter opening to bladder.
I had my checkup in November 6 months back from Kidney Hospital in Jalandhar, so we guys went home picked all the old xray reports and ultra sound scans and got to Kidney hospital at Jalandhar in Sunday the 13th. Next we met Dr. Atul Khullar who did my checkup earlier in November, told me "your stone is stuck at the junction that connects to bladder which is blocking the flow of urine and that has caused Hydroneprotic changes in the right kidney, so surgery is required to remove it since it is big and cannot be removed using Lithrotripsy(removal using laser)". So I got admitted at Kidney Hospital , and the surgery was proposed to be done next day at 2 PM, Monday. Medical checkups were initiated they day I got admission. This time it was my first surgical operation and I had no idea how it might be, but I was told they give anesthesia and you wont feel any pain.
The room looked ok, it had a TV with Cable tv connection so were happy at least we will not miss our TV programs, but later we realized its shitty cable tv connection that didnt worked at the prime time hours. There was some noise coming from outside the window as my room was in the corner that had road on one of its side. I also say a rat leaving the room, but that's not big thing, I have seen rats in PGI and DMC&H as well. The next day Nurse knocked the door early at 5:45 AM , I was already awake. she walked in with with thermometer, BP apparatus and stethoscope around her neck . She checked my body temperature, Blood pressure and pulse and left. Half an hour later she came and told me to get this XRay done around 8:00AM. I had to keep empty stomach because it was the day I was going to get surgery. later around 10 my mom and my brother also arrived.
Soon the anesthesia Doctor came and made me sit and told me its going to be little pinch pain in the back , Nobody before surgery told me anesthesia is given by injecting in spinal chord. When I was sitting the doc cleaned my back near spinal chord with some surgical disinfectant. And their it is , I injected the needle and I felt the pain and moved little backward, it wasn't like I am doing intentionally it was my body auto response to pain, then the doctor told me to their is very less space where has to inject so don't move and sit tight. and that's it, He gave me injection in spinal chord and my lower half of body was like its not even ther. I couldn't feel anything , two guys hold me had laid me down resting on bed I told Doctor to bring my Dad, (since I know my Dad is the only medical person whom I trusted and he is doctor) but he wasn't at hospital at that time. I asked the doctor for water , as I was too thirsty they made my lips wet but told drinking water will cause me to vomit.
It was like an hour they operated I had my eyes covered, I was listening to people around me one guy was saying "sidhu about some commettee", someone was talking about his pen he doesn't want to lend, I heard doctor talking about their will be 25 operations to be held on that day.. I felt nothing and they did the surgery, after it was done they shifted me on stretcher to my room where my mom, my bro and my wife were sitting. Two guys picked me and laid me down on the bed, my lower body was numb. After 2-3 hrs I restored my normal movement of my legs, but I realized I had a Bladder Catheterization, so i don't have to walk to urinate. This was my first weird experience. Due to this Catheterization I had to lye down straight on bed for the first day of surgery .If I tried to move it caused pain and irritation. A nurse brought the stones in the bottle, the stones were crushed to pieces so they can be easily taken out at the time of surgery. For the first night I couldn't sleep, I was staring on the wall clock and time seemed to pass very slow as if it was slowed by the immense gravity of a black whole, and I knew I had to go for X-ray by 8AM next day so I was just waiting for it.
Next day around 8:45AM I was taken for X-Ray, when I noticed that I have a stent placed in my uretor, the doc explained that it was placed to avoid clotting of blood since the stone they removed was stuck with the uretor skin, so this stent helped in smooth flow of urine from right kidney to bladder, The doc told, they stent will be removed after 3 weeks till than I am not supposed to do any hard work, or drive bike or go on roads, on light movement and he suggested bed rest and drink lots of water.
It was third day in my hospital till now nothing was as painful, I was so tired by lying straight, But I learnt from Dad that this catherization is done so the blood stops coming in urine, which did stop after lots of rest . My dad was again not in hospital, while the nurse came to have it removed, I am not sure how it will be removed but she took a syringe to push air in the second opening of the pipe and then he pulled it with some force, and this was so painful that I cried out loudly, tears didn't fell I hold my breadth, I was stoned and thought this is for sure not the proper way of removal, since It caused lots of pain. I hated that nurse. I don't know nurses attending sounded good and intelligent but this nurse for sure spoiled the reputation of other nurses of Kidney Hospital in my mind.
And after that every time I have to urinate in pot , but now I was having extreme level of burning mucration. I got so many injections of antibiotics through the Canole so their wasn't any pain. later the pain was gone and i started to feel better and could even walk freely.
On Wednesday in the evening Dr. Atul examined and learnt that I am doing good with recovery he told me to discharge me by next day morning, then I asked since I am doing fine I would like to go home. So he agreed and signed on discharge papers from hospital and I was free that evening to be back again later after 3 weeks for removal of stent and other 4 small stones in kidney.
my overall experience was good with Kidney Hospital the way nurses and doctors and other staff visited regularly, how cleaning was done on regular basis, except for that nurse who came on that day.
So the moral of the story : Instead of getting into trouble and bearing the pain of surgery or anesthesia or catherization its better to drink 4-5 lts of water daily to avoid kidney stones.
